GUEST SPEAKER:

Heather Drakes gave a very interesting craft talk. She was introduced by Stanley Igboanugo. Stanley has known Heather for 5-6 years. She is a Sergeant with the Durham Regional Police Services Auxiliary, and she has been a Teacher for 25 years.

Heather was born in London, England and came to Canada at the age of 3. Her parents were both from Caribbean islands originally. In 1971 when they came to Canada, they landed in Winnipeg – and her Dad quickly decided it was way too cold, so they headed to Toronto. Heather started Kindergarten early at age 3. She left school after Grade 12, but then completed her High School Graduation at age 30.

She became a CFO at Pitney Bowes with 200 employees reporting to her. She was downsized in the early ‘90s. Then she started volunteering at a local school, and eventually received Early Childhood Education certification from Durham College which she completed at home. Subsequently she became a teacher and has been with the Toronto Catholic School Board for 19 years. She is currently a Lead Resource and works with special needs children, both those with learning disabilities and those who are gifted. Her subjects are Math & Language for Grades 6/7/8.

Heather is also a member of Toastmasters, got her Master’s Degree in 2009, does event planning, and serves on a Committee of Adaptive Sports for the Paralympics.
