GUEST SPEAKER:
Devon Biddle and Colin O’Regan introduced Shannon Stuart, CEO of Ontario Shores Foundation.
Shannon spoke about the hospital in Whitby. It is one of 4 stand-alone mental health hospitals in Ontario. It is a teaching hospital, with a huge focus on the science of recovery. The hospital collaborates with professionals from health, education, justice and social services.
There is a waiting list of 3,000 for outpatient services. The wait time averages 100 days.
One in five Canadians will experience a mental health challenge in their lifetime. There are 4,000 suicides/year in Canada.
Whitby hospital has 346 beds that are occupied 24/7. The hospital has been completely paperless since 2017. Therefore they have collected huge computer metrics on patient care. They are expecting 100,000 outpatient visits in 2020. 51% of in-patients are schizophrenic.
The hospital has partnerships across Ontario to work collaboratively and share public resources.
Shannon would work with our club to find a specific purpose for any funds donated.
