FUNDRAISER # 2:  CHRISTMAS TREE SALES AT OSHAWA CENTRE – BACK ON:

President Sue found out very late on Tuesday Nov 17, that the Holiday Haven has been cancelled outside at the Oshawa Centre, by the management at the Oshawa Centre, out of concern for the safety of everyone during the COVID-19 pandemic. We thank the Oshawa Centre, Oshawa Rotary Past President and Chair of the event, Emmy Iheme, for all of their planning and kind invitation to join them. Since the trees were already cut, we bought them. THE SALE IS BASCK ON AT THE OSHWA CENTRE. The good news is that the Oshawa Centre will allow us to set up in the northwest parking lot near the old Sears store. We have been asked by the Rotary Club of Oshawa to re-join them in selling Christmas trees , outside, every day from Dec 4 to 24, with the shifts Monday thru Saturday from 11 am to 7 pm and on Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm. Our goal: Sell 100 trees, with profits of $3,000 split between our two clubs. Trees will come wrapped from Prestonvale Tree farm (same supplier that RC Bowmanville uses) – different kinds of trees at different selling prices.  We will need everyone in our club to help. And we can use and need students too who would like to volunteer and receive their community hours. President Sue will be calling you to ask you to volunteer. It is anticipated that each shift will be 3 hours (all outside). The shift list is being developed as we speak. Thank you all. Lots of fun and friendship between our clubs.  We need a generator for the lights. Help. And we need volunteers to help sell. Shifts are as follows: Dec 4 to 24 Monday thru Saturday (11 am to 2 pm: 2 pm to 4:30 pm and 4:30 pm to 7 pm: And on Sunday from 10 am to 1 pm; 1 pm to 3:;30 pm and 3:30 pm to 6 pm) .  We invite you to find a family and donate a tree to them we will deliver.

FUNDRAISER # 3:  DINNER ORDER & PICKUP FROM BISTRO 238:

President Sue and her committee are looking at having a VIRTUAL DINNER with Bistro 238 in the near future (likely in the new year).  It may even be on an ongoing basis, every two weeks. This will be pick up and / or delivery. We will need volunteer drivers for one evening, every two weeks. Please let President Sue know as soon as you can. Lots to planning taking place for this new fundraiser. We need your help. Be sure to check out the Bistro 238 website for a sample of their offerings: https://www.bistro238.com/.

ROTARY CLUB FUN NIGHT # 1: OUR ROTARY CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY ON ZOOM – DECEMBER 8 AT 7 PM –  Rotary Club Virtual Christmas Party, Spouses invited. Dress up or at least in your finest Christmas attire ! It’s Christmas. We are going to have some fun, Christmas Carol singing and some surprise friends to see too. From the Fun & Fellowship Committee.

ROTARY CLUB FUN NIGHT # 2 ON ZOOM -  DECEMBER 15 AT 7 PM - GAMES NIGHT AT OSHAWA-PARKWOOD:

Ana Rejab is setting up for us a games night. Here’s Ana to tell us how it will work:

Hello fellow Rotarians! Do you remember playing the "Alphabet Game" on long road trips? Do you remember playing "Guess Who?" So many of you have worked so hard because Rotarians are do-ers! Shall we have a night to have fun over zoom while also contributing a small amount to our chapter? $5 to join, (you can e-transfer that to treasurer Bill.) winner takes 3/5 of the pot.

Let's start the night with "Guess Who?" Ana will assign a famous person to each person joining via direct email. On that night, we will take turns to be in the spotlight. Each participant can ask one question to the one in the hot seat. The one in the spotlight will only answer "Yes" or "No". After all of us have had our turn in the spotlight, we write down our answers and reveal at the same time.

The top 5 will proceed to the next level - the "Alphabet Game". Highest scorer(s) will go first.  I will name the latter and category. Each contestant will name something in that category that starts with the said letter, 10 seconds per contestant. We will carry on until all but one is eliminated.

Spouses are certainly invited. If you want them to be part of the game, then they will have to put $5 into the pot too.

TED MORRISON REMINDER: NOVEMBER IS ROTARY FOUNDATION MONTH:

Ted encourages all of us to focus on the importance of the activities and the importance of donating to the Rotary Foundation, both to the Annual programs Fund and to the Polio Fund (Bill Gates matches the Polio donation 2 to 1). Donations are tax deductible. Lots of info on the Rotary website: https://www.rotary.org/en/about-rotary/rotary-foundation . On Dec 1, PDG Ted and David Penney will be our speakers on The Rotary Foundation, Stay tuned.

ROTARY CLUB OF OSHAWA-PARKWOOD CLOTHING:

This week, we sent out a flyer (hats, shirts, blouses, coats, etc) and Lennis is ready to take orders. Be sure to give him a call. He has ordered for the 5 customers and expects delivery in a week or two.

CHRISTMAS REMEMBRANCES:

Hilda Finnigan has a list of 12 friends of Rotary this year, that we annually bring good cheer to at Christmas time and will purchase poinsettias. Thank you to everyone who volunteered to help with this act of kindness. Can you help Hilda with the deliveries? Please give her a call.

SAD NEWS FROM SLEDGE HOCKEY:

Heather Drakes announced that the young boy whose body was found in a Lake near Peterborough this weekend, Bret Leblanc, was a member of the Durham Sledge Hockey team. We will be hearing from the Sledge Hockey organization in January at one of our weekly meetings. Mark Blackmore referees for that organization. Very close to home.  A very sad day for the family. Our hearts go out to them.

DURHAM COLLEGE NAMES THEIR GLOBAL CLASSROOM IN HONOUR OF ROTARY CLUBS IN DURHAM REGION (PLUS PORT HOPE):

Dave Andrews said how thrilled he was to hear the news this week, from our friend Jennifer Clark of Durham College. Dave congratulated everyone from the two Oshawa Clubs (and Ken hurst from Ajax) for their assistance. Real teamwork.

Jennifer writes: “Dear Rotarians, I am writing to thank you again for your Club’s donation to Durham College in relation to our Building Something Amazing campaign for the new Centre for Collaborative Education (CFCE) on the college’s Oshawa campus. With the collective support from all the Rotary Clubs in Durham Region and the Rotary Club of Port Hope, we have received commitments totalling just over $100,000!

When we began this initiative in 2017, our plan had been to name what is known as the Meet, Pitch, Play Space within the 360insights Entrepreneurship Centre should we surpass $100,000, or the Global Classroom if we surpassed $150,000. Since that time, we have had the pleasure of hosting three World Polio Day events in the Global Classroom and have come to learn more about Rotary’s international vision to promote peace, fight disease, support education and combat poverty. Given DC’s focus on internationalization, the purpose of the Global Classroom, and the generous support from all Rotary Clubs in Durham Region and the Rotary Club of Port Hope, DC will name the Global Classroom in honour of Rotary. Your Club’s support is greatly appreciated! Best regards, Jennifer “ , Jennifer A. Clark, CFRE, Senior Development Officer, Office of Development and Alumni Affairs, Durham College

DC names Global Classroom in honour of local Rotary Clubs

Durham College (DC) is pleased to announce the re-naming of its Global Classroom. Inspired by Rotary’s international efforts to promote peace, fight disease, support education and combat poverty, and in honour of local Clubs’ financial support, the space will now be known as Rotary Global Classroom.

The newly named Rotary Global Classroom is used by faculty to expose students to international perspectives. The only one of its kind at an Ontario college, the facility connects students and thought leaders from around the world in real-time to discuss issues of importance and to collaborate on solutions by sharing knowledge and skills. In addition to hosting the Global Class, a course founded by DC professor Lon Appleby dedicated to expanding students’ understanding of world issues, the space is also used for student presentations and competitions, conferences, and collaborations with the community, such as the recent Rotary World Polio Day event.

The Rotary Global Classroom is a landmark feature of DC’s new Centre for Collaborative Education (CFCE). Located at the Oshawa campus, construction of the CFCE was funded in part through the Building Something Amazing Campaign and was supported by a collective fundraising campaign involving all 10 Rotary Clubs in Durham Region and the Rotary Club of Port Hope.

“Internationalization is a key focus at Durham College,” says DC President Don Lovisa, “and the Rotary Global Classroom plays an important role in bringing a variety of world views to our campus. Given Rotary’s strong focus on making lasting, positive change across the globe, the name is a perfect fit. The Rotary Global Classroom supports the college’s strategic goals and enhances the learning experience for our students through innovative and transformative education. We are very grateful for all the Clubs’ donations, and pleased to also recognize their financial support through this naming.”

DC is delighted that all Durham Region Rotary Clubs and the Rotary Club of Port Hope chose to participate and gratefully acknowledges the efforts of past Rotary Club presidents Dave Andrews (Oshawa-Parkwood), Ron Dick (Oshawa) and Ken Hurst (Ajax) who spearheaded the donation initiative to support the Building Something Amazing campaign.

“Durham College’s Global Classroom aligns so well with Rotary’s mission,” says Ron Dick, who is also Rotary District 7070’s Governor-elect. “The Classroom is a great asset to the community and we’re delighted to have been able to use it to host World Polio Day celebrations in Durham Region. It made perfect sense for us to support the Building Something Amazing campaign. I think I can speak on behalf of all the participating Clubs in this instance, to say we are honoured to have Rotary’s international work and our contributions recognized through the naming of the Rotary Global Classroom.”

HAPPY THOUGHTS:

Ted M – Sharron is busy shopping , this year in Barrie. Back tomorrow.

Tim D – Happy his snow blower is working … ready for the snow

Janice – She and Kris decided instead of giving gifts to eachother this year, they are making a donation to Denise House so that they can have a Christmas Dinner for their clients living at the House.

David Penney – Happy to try local at restaurants in the east end of the city, but they were filled to their 10 person capacity, so they had to settle for take-out. Business is busy with the 10 person limit.

Ana- Happy that her baby sitter is still there until 8 pm. She also helps with the English lessons .

Kris – Very happy that the COVID-19 vaccine is very close now. But he warned everybody not to let their guard down. Wear the masks, wash your hands, wear PPE, stay safe everyone.

Larry Hurren – Is on the Board of Diretcors at the 700 – 900 Wilson Rd complex and has the owners getting the whole place decorated inside and out for Christmas. Take a  drive by and see the lights.

Heather D-  Very Happy. She joined our Rotary Club exactly 2 years ago this coming Friday. And we are so glad she did.
