GUEST SPEAKER : Durham Regional Police Chief Paul Martin
Introduced by Past Pres Dave Andrews, Paul Martin has been a police officer for the past 27 years and has spent his entire career with the Durham Regional Police Service. He began his career in frontline patrol in Oshawa, and has served in a number of operational and administrative units, including Tactical Operations, Nuclear Division and Human Resources.
Paul was a key figure in the development and implementation of the Nuclear Security Division shortly after the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Paul was the Deputy Chief in charge of Operational Support, which included Corporate Communications, Crime Management, I.T., Communications/911, Court Services, and Professional Standards unit.
On May 31, 2014 Chief Paul Martin was sworn in as Chief of Police for Durham Regional Police Service, in charge of over 870 sworn members and 330 civilians , at 5 stations, with 192 police cars, 2 marine boats , a helicopter and 8 service dogs.
Chief Martin is also a recipient of Queens Diamond Jubilee for community service and honorary member of the Rotary Club of Oshawa. And let's not forget about our signature project – The Kids' Safety Village of Durham Region. The Durham Regional Police Service has been a fine partner in our Kids' Safety Village of Durham Region snce the very beginning and Chief Paul has been a staunch supporter.
Every year, when we send our request for the Chief to speak to our Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood, he always says YES.
Successes in Oshawa include a steady crime rate, many gun confiscations, going to a team model and the Kids' Safety Village. He noted our Lennis Trotter’s role in this success.
Issues that present challenge are crimes against persons and property and the high homicide rate this year which is about double the average.
Club members had many questions and Larry Hurren asked about a very serious issue his Office is having with druggies in the area frightening staff and patients. DRPS personnel in the audience took notes and will investigate for Larry.
