GUEST SPEAKER : Diane McKenzie, C E O of Epilepsy Durham

Diane is the head of Epilepsy Durham and an Engineering graduate from UOIT. Diane educated us on the various types of Epilepsy and described some of the challenges faced by sufferers. Very touching examples were used.
They have a Staff of two and receive no Government or United Way Funding. They rely on private partnerships and donations from the Public and Service Clubs and other organizations. There used to be more than a ten year wait to get proper diagnosis.
The good news is that Oshawa finally has an Epileptologist at the Clinic. The ability to refer to this specialized Doctor is a Godsend.
There were many questions from interested Rotarians following her talk.
Epilepsy Durham Region is the place where those living with this neurological disease can receive education, and helpful resources. Utilizing a network of services, our team provides free support and education to the individual and their family, while also building community awareness in Durham Region. We offer a number of programs to assist with mental illness, isolation and other concerns related to this disease. Epilepsy Durham Region has recently launched the Clinic to Community Education program, which helps ensure that people living with epilepsy and their caregivers can reach their full potential and receive the medical care that they need in their community.

How We Accomplish This: Fundraising and Donations - all contributions help fund our programming, education, advocacy and services which are leading us towards alleviating the stigma and myths of living with Epilepsy. Every donation makes a difference.
YOU can Volunteer. Epilepsy Durham Region is a vibrant community that welcomes the participation and contribution of people from all walks of life. The quest to heighten the awareness and dispel the myths of Epilepsy is urgent, we need your help. Volunteering is an exchange of skills, friendship and empowerment. Your ability to donate a few hours a month directly impacts the quality of life of those touched by Epilepsy. Joining our network of dedicated volunteers upholds the self-esteem and commitment of those with whom you volunteer and together you directly impact the quality of life for so many.
