WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO:

ROTARY – People of Action

Rotary is where neighbours, friends, and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders, and take action to create lasting change.

We're made up of local business, professional, and civic leaders.

We meet regularly, get to know each other, form friendships and through that, we're able to get things done in our community.

It's up to YOU.............Join leaders in our community

Be sure to share this with all of your friends and associates and ask them to get in touch with our Club President President Hilda Finnigan at 905-431-4258 or Club Past President Linda Porritt at 905-626-6386

You are invited to our next Rotary meeting. You may wish to become a Rotarian. Dinner is on us. Isn't it time to give back to your community?.

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behaviour that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

  1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviours and activities

  2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

  3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

  4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

  5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

  6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

  7. Honour the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavour or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

  8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

THE ROTARY FOUR-WAY TEST

of things we think, say and do:

  1. Is it the truth

  2. Is it fair to all concerned?

  3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

  4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

MINUTES OF REGULAR MEETING:  Tuesday, September 23, 2025

Editor: Tess Pierce

Tonight’s Meeting Theme is Thanks to Al Finnigan

“Rich Tickety Boo”

The phrase "Rich Tickety Boo" is not a standard English idiom. Instead, it appears to be a creative play on the British colloquialism "tickety-boo," which means "in good order," "all right," or "satisfactory". Adding the word "rich" likely serves to intensify the meaning, implying that a situation is not just fine, but perfectly excellent or lavishly successful.

This editor is thankful to Rotarians, like Al, for broadening her vocabulary.

CHECK PRESENTATION TO THE FOUNDATION

Vahun Murukappar & Mahlan Thiru from PrimePath Community Care present President David with donation.

It all started as a conversation Shashi had at our BBQ. When talking to Vahun, Shashi learned about the work he does helping people age well at home. Vahun, impressed with the Foundation’s work, pledged $500.00 and tonight he and his colleague presented that check. Vahun told us about PrimePath and the work they do collaborating with all levels of government and with local groups like Rotary. He said if we had any feedback that can improve their work, he would appreciate it.

NEW MEMBER INDUCTION:

Our newest member is Bev Fiddler.

Bev is already a familiar site at our meetings and Shashi formally introduced her tonight. Most of us knew she was recently retired from teaching, but WOW! Her work on the DRPS Diversity Advisory Committee, her long-standing involvement with the Elementary Teacher’s Federation and volunteering at the John Howard Society shows her dedication to community service.

Bev shared her moving family story about how Rotary helped her mother.

Welcome Bev! We are lucky to have you.

Director Updates

Tonight, the Directors updated the members about the projects and contributions we’ve made to date. Here is a summary of these reports.

International Committee, David Penney

The most recent request was for 1000$ for ShelterBox initiatives in Pakistan (flood relief) and Afghanistan (Earthquake relief). Approved pledges include Literacy project in the slums of Birnagar, West Bengal with Belleville Rotary. Project led by Dr Ruth Mathieson, and the Water project in Uganda led by RC of Newmarket’s Richard Mewhinney. Other support is going to the Dominican Republic to help sugar plantation workers led by Whitby-Sunrise Rotarian Janet Thorsteinson, and the South African Water Project led by Whitby-Sunrise’s Shashi Bedi to purchase “Hippo Rollers” to transport water & gardening equipment.

We continue to support Steve Rutledge and the Adopt-A-Village-Laos and WAKAM the Western Alliance of Kenya Against Malaria proposed last year by our colleague, Linda Porritt.

Membership Committee, Shashi Bhatia

Her focus is to increase membership primarily from the Durham area and especially the younger generation that will support the ‘golden people’ in the club.

Rotary Foundation, Donald Igbokwe

Donald’s challenge for this year is to beat our donation goals again. He also announced that on November 4th Rotarian Bob Wallace will speak to our club.

Public Relations, Al Finnigan

We are busy finalizing the World Polio Day (Thanks to Dave Andrews). We are busy promoting People of Action with the new Rotary-branded shirts and pens. Social media is expanding, and we post at least 4 times a month. We are also looking to update promotional materials and increase our presence in Oshawa events.

Community Service, Al Finnigan for Camille Miquel-Farfan

In addition to our traditional donations to Lakeridge Health and the Participation House, we are looking to donate to Camp Scugog. The Participation House Christmas party is at the Jube on Tuesday, December 2. Janice Coupland is coordinating this.

Executive Secretary, Dave Andrews

There is so much information available on the Rotary International-Central website. Check out what’s planned. Check into MyRotary on the rotary.org website and see our goals in Rotary Club Central as we strive to get the Club Excellence Award again this year. Check out the Rotary Projects Center while you are there.
