THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behaviour that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviours and activities

2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

7. Honour the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavour or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

We respectfully acknowledge that we are hosting this Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood meeting from land within the jurisdiction of Williams Treaties and on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations, the Anishnaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. Janice reminded us that our next social evening with spouses is September 26 (NO Meeting at Golf Club that night). We will see you all at 6 PM at the Mandarin Restaurant, 1319 Airport Blvd Rod in Oshawa. 

Hilda announced that the Bingo schedules are out and we have volunteers now for all of them . Thank you to everyone.

Hilda also announced that we have tulips for Polio – 20 bulbs for$20. Please buy a box and tell your friends too.

Al Finnigan announced that we are having a short Board of Directors Meeting following the regular meeting tonight.

Rotary Leadership Institute -“In Person” has been cancelled for the fall of 2023. It will be held on ZOOM. Parts One Two and Three will be held on line. Part One: from 6 to 8 pm on Sept 13, 20 and 27. Part Two from 6 to 8 pm on Oct 11, 18 and 25. Part Three from 6 to 8 pm on November 8, 15, and 22. The Spring 2024 RLI will hopefully be held at Centennial College Event Centre,

ROTARIANS CREATE HOPE AS THEY WORK TO SAVE THE MONARCH BUTTERFLY

Happy to announce that the Rotary Club of Ajax is Hosting the Monarch Butterfly Statuette Tour

Most of you have probably heard about the decline of pollinators and related efforts to reverse the situation through initiatives such as Operation Pollination and the Monarch Ultra Marathon. The Monarch Ultra is taking a different approach this year, with a beautiful Monarch statue being shipped by train from Alberta, through Winnipeg, Toronto onto Windsor and ultimately to Monterey, Mexico. This September, Rotary District 7070 (especially the Toronto area Clubs) has the unique opportunity to participate in the Monarch Hope statue tour (photo below) to promote pollinator protection, sponsored by the Monterrey Metropolitano Rotary Club (Mexico), Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railroad, and others. In addition, your Club is invited to contribute (NOT a requirement) towards a Global Grant (of $150,000) for habitat restoration in the forests of Mexico where the Monarch overwinters. This tour builds on last year’s 1st Monarch statue event that raised more than $100,000 for oyamel firs.

MOMA Hope statue begins this year’s journey in Calgary/Edmonton. Next it’s on to Minneapolis, Winnipeg, Toronto, Windsor, Detroit, Chicago, Kansas City, Dallas, Houston, and several points south into Mexico ending its journey at the Monarch Biosphere Reserve (near Morelia, Mexico).

November 27 - District Governor John Burns Official Visit to the 2 Rotary Clubs in Oshawa – 11:45 am to 1:30 pm, Wendel Clark’s Restaurant, 67 Simcoe St N, Oshawa, ON L1G 4S3. A luncheon meeting. Joint meeting of the two Rotary Clubs here in Oshawa. Our Nov 28 meeting is cancelled.

GUEST SPEAKER:      DAN CARTER – MAYOR OF OSHAWA – HIS ANNUAL ADDRESS

Introduced by Dave Andrews, Mayor Dan Carter gave a very positive, upbeat and optimistic speech about what is happening now in Oshawa.

Some points he included were:

There is going to be a major investment in police in the very near future.

We now have 35,000 post-secondary students in the city. The international students come from 140 countries.

OPG Head Office moved into the old GM building and created 2,000 jobs. They are developing modular nuclear facilities that will bring even more jobs in the near future.

The Northwood Business Park at the corner of Taunton and Thornton will house MAJOR international companies that will employ thousands of people. See: https://www.oshawa.ca/en/business-development/resources/Documents/Northwood-FINAL-ua---2.pdf

Trent University has just started a logistics course that will train many.

He commented on the "Special Powers" that he has received from the Province its mainly to build more houses faster. He says there are 8,000 houses ready to go. He says the city's budget is no longer the Council’s budget but rather it is now called the Mayor's budget (By provincial law). He also commented on Bill 23 and how it has punished municipalities he feels they will lose over $75 million over the next five years.

He also said the opioid crisis is the worst health epidemic that Canada has ever experienced
