THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behaviour that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviours and activities

2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

We respectfully acknowledge that we are hosting this Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood meeting from land within the jurisdiction of Williams Treaties and on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations, the Anishnaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. Thank you to everyone who volunteered at the Rotary Club of Oshawa’s Ribfest and at our tent at Autofest this past weekend.  A big thank you to Craig Porritt for his help with the Rotary tent and Ploughman’s Choice at the Norh Oshawa Farmer’s market and for his help setting up the Rotary booth at Autofest. Thank you to Keith and Velma Ratchford, and to Ana Rejab and her son Jordell for volunteering at Autofest.

Ploughman’s Choice Sales are going well. We will not be back at the North Oshawa Farmer’s market on Sept 2

There will be a Corn Roast at the North Oshawa Farmers market on Sept 9 from 11 am to 1 pm. Come on out everyone. Proceeds go to Simcoe Hall’s Food Bank.

Thank you to Janice Coupland for setting up and hosting our social evening at Bella Notte Restaurant on Aug 22. Lots of fun with Rotary friends.

Our Sept 6 Board of Directors Meeting will start at 5:30 pm and will be at Linda Porritt’s office  - Centruy 21 Infinity Realty, 650 King St E, Unit 211.

 On Sept 11, we will have tulip bulbs for sale. Same as last year. Boxes will cost $20 each and available from Hilda and Al and will be for sale throughout the fall at the North Oshawa Farmers Market. Please start preselling to your friends today. Proceeds will go to END POLIO NOW.

Rotary Leadership Institute -“In Person” has been cancelled for the fall of 2023.It will be held on ZOOM. Parts One Two and Three will be held on line. Part One: from 6 to 8 pm on Sept 13, 20 and 27. Part Two from 6 to 8 pm on Oct 11, 18 and 25. Part Three from 6 to 8 pm on November 8, 15, and 22. The Spring 2024 RLI will hopefully be held at Centennial College Event Centre,

November 27 - District Governor John Burns Official Visit to the 2 Rotary Clubs in Oshawa – 11:45 am to 1:30 pm, Wendel Clark’s Restaurant, 67 Simcoe St N, Oshawa, ON L1G 4S3. A luncheon meeting. Joint meeting of the two Rotary Clubs here in Oshawa. Our Nov 28 meeting is cancelled.

PRESENTATION:

Our International Service Director David Penney presented to Steve Rutledge, founder of Adopt A Village LAOS, with a cheque for $1,500 from the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood to provide clean water to villages in LAOS.

Jan – Thank you to everyone who came out to our social evening at Bella Notte on Aug 22. Great time. 

Robert K – happy to sit beside Jennifer French tonight. The first time she came to our meeting (very shortly after her first election), Robert sat beside her , introduced himself, and asked her what she did for a living.

Al – had a good game of golf today and beat Keith Ratchford and Al gave all of his winnings to our Rotary Club. Way to go Al. So sorry, Keith.

Dave A – Over the next few days, Dave is Happy to be taking the photos as our Rotary Club makes 4 major donations (with our club directors and Pres Linda) to Durham Youth Services, Durham College, Community Care Durham, and to Lakeridge Health. We really are People of Action.

John K – very happy (with a large donation) that the tests he had recently show no cancer.

Dave P – Happy to make that $1,500 donation to Adopt A Village tonight

Ted – on Sept 21, he has a appointment to see a surgeon for a possible shoulder replacement

Hilda – thank you to everyone who helped at Autofest and to Craig for all his help over the last 2 weekends and to Ana and Jordell for coming out to help at Autofest. AND thank you toJjan for a wonderful club social at Bella Notte.

Steve Rutledge – thank you so much for the generous donation to Adopt A Vill age Laos, and he is going out to visit his sister in Vancouver this week ( and he has 17 presentations to make to Rotary Clubs while he is out there).

GUEST SPEAKER:      JENNIFER FRENCH – MEMBER OF PROVINCIAL PARLIAMENT FOR OSHAWA

Introduced by Dave Andrews, Jennifer French taught elementary school in Japan and here in Oshawa before becoming our MPP in June 2014. She was re-elected in 2081 and again in 2022, She is the member of the loyal opposition and critic for Infrastructure, Transportation and Highways and is Cahir of the Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs. She actively gives back to her community and has a committed record of fighting for workers rights, being actively involved in EFTO (Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario, the Ontario Federation of Labour and the Durham Region Labour Council. She is a strong supporter of our Rotary Club taking a personal interest in the Kids Safety Village, our Reverse Draw , Dinner and Silent Auction, Kids Against Hunger (with her partner Jon) and with our Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup days at Lakeview Park and the Second Marsh. She has made speeches in the Ontario Legislature thanking our Rotary Clubs in Oshawa for their work eradicating Polio, and she hosted “Leading Girls, leading Women, Building Communities” Provincial Awards in 2019 and presented Carolina Rodrigue (Rotaract President) and Rotarian Kim Boarman with these provincial awards.

 Jennifer opened her remarks bringing our club up to date with her recent activities. She attended the recent AMO (Association of Municipalities of Ontario) annual general meeting in London Ont, where she saw that many municipalities are having the same challenges: minimum wages not enough to pay housing bills and the backlogs with housing at every stage affecting seniors and young adults alike.

During the last session, she worked with the Minister of Mental Health and was instrumental in introducing a bill that resulted with the Back Door Mission in Oshawa  to be the recipient of $1 million for their on site mental health assistance.

In 2018, she introduced the private members bill that resulted in the removal of tolls of highways 412 and 418.

She is introduced a private members bill 15 (fairness for road users) regarding Highway Traffic Act violations and higher penalties and is now working with Minister Mulrooney’s staff at the Committee level.

She has worked closely with Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Tibolo as well.

She is very concerned with health issues and its privatization in Ontario, particularly what is covered and what extras are not covered by clinics, and advises us to be careful and to reach out to her office if we are not sure.

She is concerned with the dental program for seniors and the threshold for those now not covered (because CPP and OAS  was recently increased just enough to make this program unattainable for many).

She has received many calls from people in Minden since their emergency room was closed and the closest is now in Haliburton.

As Provincial Committee Chair of Procedure and House Affairs, the rennovations at Queens Park will be part of her portfolio and where the legislature will sit during these vast rennovations. It also includes the disposition of the statues on the grounds of Queen’s Park.

She commented on many issues during the Q and A period regarding education, city vs regional government, and noise at the Oshawa airport

She told us that she has a staff that does case work for individuals all day, and if any of us need her assistance, we should call her office. They are there to help.
