OFFICIAL BULLETIN OF THE ROTARY CLUB OF OSHAWA-PARKWOOD

Mailing Address: 96 KING ST. E., OSHAWA, ONTARIO, CANADA L1H 1B6

2017-2018 ROTARY THEME: “ROTARY: MAKING A DIFFERENCE”

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT: Ian Riseley – Rotary Club of Sandringham, Victoria, Australia

R.I. DISTRICT 7070 GOVERNOR: Neil Phillips - Rotary Club of Toronto in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

ASSISTANT DISTRICT 7070 GOVERNOR: Beth Selby – Rotary Club of Cobourg in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada

What is Rotary ?

We're made up of local business, professional, and civic leaders.

We meet regularly, get to know each other, form friendships and through that, we're able to get things done in our community. It's up to YOU.............Join leaders in our community

Be sure to share this with all of your friends and associates and ask them to get in touch with our Membership Director Lennis Trotter at 905-985-0963 or our Club President Ted Morrison at 905-623-3810. You are invited to our next Rotary meeting. You may wish to become a Rotarian. Dinner is on us. Isn't it time to give back to your community?.

WHO WE ARE AND WHAT WE DO:

ROTARY – People of Action

Rotary is where neighbours, friends, and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders, and take action to create lasting change.

See: http://video.rotary.org/EgFi/ia17-people-of-action-public-image-campaign-launch-joe-otin/

THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behavior that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

  1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviors and activities

  2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

  3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

  4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

  5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

  6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

  7. Honor the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavor or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

  8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

THE ROTARY FOUR-WAY TEST

of things we think, say and do:

  1. Is it the truth

  2. Is it fair to all concerned?

  3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

  4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

ACE OF SPADES DRAW  Larry Hurren won – and he drew Queen of Spades

HAPPY BUCKS:

Bob Koski enjoyed the Oscars

Janice Coupland – had a guest on Saturday, from India, but he has been in Canada since December.

Kind, sweet, great nephew of Kris’. Gave the highest compliment, he felt at home with Kris and Janice.

When he first googled Kris, Rotary came up first.

Larry had a birthday but did not miss cha cha cha! Going on a wonderful vacation to Portugal and Spain.

Stanley will be on vacation for 14 days, going to Europe and he will visit the Pope!

Bob Stewart (even though he wore the wrong coat and did not have a toonie) had a great two weeks in Florida and

Visited many of the restaurants that Ted and Dave recommended.

Linda was in Toronto the past Friday and Sunday and then off to Chicago! She had a wonderful time, enjoyed t

The speeches and saw Ian Risley’s office, what an honour. Linda skipped the world of beer to watch the

Oscars but was disappointed in the songs.

Pat announced March 18, her 51st wedding anniversary.

ROTARY MOMENT:

Linda - attended the Multi-District – President Elect Training 2 on Friday and Saturday – then went on Sunday & Monday, to Rotary International Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois – Linda will share photos on Facebook and on District 7070 website. She met Incoming President Barry Rassin, and met many Rotary International staff who will be a great source of info during her year as President. Linda met Evan Burrell, from NSW Australia, who spoke to the incoming President about social media. Evan has been highlighted many times in The Rotarian magazine. Evan was a Rotoractor until he was 30.

GUEST SPEAKER:

Name of Speaker: Janice Coupland

Introducer: Kris Sachdeva

Thanked By: Sandy McDowell

Note: Thank you to Jan for her very informative craft talk tonight, especially on just a week's notice. Who would like to do their craft talk (again)? It is an excellent way of getting to know all of our members – new and not so new.

Jan’s Remarks:

Kris introduced Janice, he has known her for 33 years. Janice joined Rotary two years ago and now Janice is his girlfriend. Janice praised Kris for his kindness and commented on how he was an asset to our club.

Janice was born in Oshawa and is a true Oshawa girl, have lots of family and friends in the city. Her father retired from General Motors with 37 years of service. Her Mom was a stay at home Mom and entered the workforce when Janice and her sister were older. Abe Taylor was her uncle, a union leader at GM and a well known Oshawa icon.

Her sister, Mom and Dad predeceased her and she looked after them, willingly. She had the time and so much love was exchanged; cannot buy that!

Janice was two sons, she has never called them step children. One is in Sarnia, a paramedic and Janice now has a grandson. The other son is local and is an architectural technologist.

Janice started her career at a very young age of 12, at the Eastview Boys and Girls Club. Other jobs followed: Ponderosa and Bonita Shoes. A talented sales person, she was often offered a pair of shoes for her high sales.

Janice went to modeling school, for the life experience.

Durham College followed and her first career as a secretary began. Very busy job answered many phone lines.

Janice worked in many positions over the years and was successful in all endeavours. At one time, her position was contingent on a single mother leaving and of course Janice would not let that happen, she left.

Positions in the media were sought and before she knew it, she was a sales assistant. 9/11 hurt the industry and Janice then worked for 8 years at Rogers through an agency. She even worked in finance for a short length of time and was a success in that department as well.

Janice always left on good terms and a few jobs later, she ended up at CHEX for 9 years. Left that position due to re-structuring. She then changed course a bit and worked at a few funeral homes, including working at Dignity were Dave Mankiewicz, her boss, the best boss ever! She now works at Destefano Funeral Home, in after care and loves her job.

Janice now has time and decided to join the Parkwod Rotary Club of Oshawa instead of Lions and we sure are glad of that.
