THE OBJECT OF ROTARY

is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful

occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of

business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

Rotary Code of Conduct provides a framework for ethical behaviour that all Rotarians can use, together with The Four-Way Test, in their business and professional activities.

ROTARY CODE OF CONDUCT

As a Rotarian, I will

1. Exemplify the core value of integrity in all behaviours and activities

2. Use my vocational experience and talents to serve in Rotary

3. Conduct all of my personal, business, and professional affairs ethically, encouraging and fostering high ethical standards as an example to others

4. Be fair in all dealings with others and treat them with the respect due to them as fellow human beings

5. Promote recognition and respect for all occupations which are useful to society

6. Offer my vocational talents: to provide opportunities for young people, to work for the relief of the special needs of others, and to improve the quality of life in my community

7. Honour the trust that Rotary and fellow Rotarians provide and not do anything that will bring disfavour or reflect adversely on Rotary or fellow Rotarians

8. Not seek from a fellow Rotarian a privilege or advantage not normally accorded others in a business or professional relationship

We respectfully acknowledge that we are hosting this Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood meeting from land within the jurisdiction of Williams Treaties and on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations, the Anishnaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. This acknowledgement reminds us of our responsibilities to our relationships and the ancestral lands on which we learn, share and live.

NOV  5 - Kids Against Hunger packaging at the Jubilee Pavilion (about 8:30 am to 2 pm) with Oshawa, Whitby, Bowmanville and Whitby-Sunrise Rotary Clubs and our civic leaders. CLOCKS CHANGE THAT MORNING. We will need some volunteers to help set up starting at 7:30 am.

President Linda presented a Rotary District 7070 Foundation Grant for $6,000 to our Treasurer Bill Creamer to  cover some of the food we are packing .

NOV  8 - Board of Directors Meeting at 5pm at McIntosh Anderson Kellam Funeral Home

Rotary Leadership Institute -  “In Person” has been cancelled for the fall of 2023. It will be held on ZOOM. Parts One Two and Three will be held on line.  Part Three from 6 to 8 pm on November 8, 15, and 22. The Spring 2024 RLI will hopefully be held at Centennial College Event Centre, 937 Progress Ave, Scarborough, ON M1G 3T8, in late March or early April.

NOV 9 – Oshawa Walk of Fame – Rotary Club of Oshawa at the Jubilee Pavillion at Lakeview Park starting at 5 pm. The mission of the Oshawa Walk of Fame is to preserve, Celebrate, and Showcase Oshawa’s history and heritage of excellence and achievement. The Oshawa Walk of Fame highlights the achievements and success of individuals and groups who have significantly contributed to the life of the City. At our Gala induction dinner, we will celebrate those who have significantly contributed to our City and beyond. We will honour the past and inspire the future! , 2023 inductees: Ken Shaw: Retired CTV New Anchor, Andrew Nicholls and Darrell Vickers:  Comedy Writing Team and Head Writers for Johnny Carson, The Ontario Regiment: 157 Years of Service, Ross Mackie: Mackie Group, Adriane Stewart: Opera Singer. NOV 27 - District Governor John Burns Official Visit to the 2 Rotary Clubs in Oshawa – 11:45 am to 1:30 pm, Wendel Clark’s Restaurant, 67 Simcoe St N, Oshawa, ON L1G 4S3. A luncheon meeting. Joint meeting of the two Rotary Clubs here in Oshawa. Our Nov 28 meeting is cancelled.

DEC  10 – Concert for Feed The Need in Durham – The 11 Rotary Clubs in Durham Region invite everyone in Rotary, Rotaract clubs and the whole Rotary family in District 7070 in southern to the 6th Annual Concert for Feed The Need in Durham. Arranged by Joe Solway, Rotary Club of Bowmanville.

The Concert to Feed the Need in Durham is a co-presentation of Rotary clubs of Durham Region and Feed the Need in Durham. It brings together award winning musicians from across the Region in support of Feed the Need in Durham, which collects and distributes food to over 65 emergency food providers across Durham, including food banks, shelters, meal and snack programs and other social service agencies. Feed the Need in Durham provides over 1.5M meals to Durham residents annually.

Cakes and Hams 2023 – Ted asked everyone to have their orders in to him by November 12. That is the date we send our final orders to our two suppliers.

Hilda also announced that Tulips for Polio – 20 bulbs for$20 – SOLD OUT – Thank you to Ted Morrison for selling the final boxes at the Rotary District 7070 Conference.

Dave Andrews – Today is October 24- World Polio Day worldwide – Thank you to everyone who made the Oct 19 World Polio Day LIVE from the Rotary Global Classroom at Durham College so successful. Lennis also mentioned the Kids Safety Village Conference on November 6/7/8; conference delegates will be visiting our Village on November 7

Al Finnigan read a very appreciative Thank You letter from Lakeridge Health for our donation to the purchase of the Robotic Arm, Hilda passed around a picture of this device and Jan noted that she saw this device at the Gala Dinner on October 21^s Sue noted that some of us are proud to be acquainted with Sarah Rose who worked on the mother board of this equipment.

Al also announced a number of checks approved for donations to Salvation Army, Simcoe Hall, Sharon’s Kids, Diabetes, Hospice Whitby. These all support our local community needs.

President Linda called on Brady Bodley Director of Public Image for an Update to the Club:

Brady gave an excellent summary of our activities which profile Oshawa Parkwood Rotary in the community.  These include facebook pages, instagram , press releases, news media, in particular Neighbour Today, check presentations, our tent at Market and Peony Festival.

ACE OF SPADES:  Jan Coupland won the opportunity to draw the Ace of Spades. Jan  drew the Ace of Clubs. The jackpot grows.

HAPPY BUCKS

Robbie Larocque noted the substantial income realized from Bingo which is achieved with minimal volunteer hours. Bill Creamer supported this noting our average monthly income from this fundraiser is $1600

David Andrews noted that today October 24^th is World Polio Day, thanking everyone for supporting our event on October 19

Dave also welcomed our guests looking forward to hearing an update on the Oshawa Generals

Hilda Finnigan told the story of “Al’s missing Vest” which turned up at home in the closet!!; enjoyed a successful District Conference

Past President Dave Andrews introduced our guest speakers – Derek Laxdal Coach and Roger Hunt General Manager of our own Oshawa Generals Hockey Team. These speakers spoke highly of the players past and present.  They also are proud told us of their own journey as players and how they progressed to their present positions.  They bring much experience to the ice and those playing today. 

They spoke proudly of the Alumni who often return to visit and are proud of the role they play in the lives of young players often away from home for the first time. Mentoring is a large part of this. Winning the Memorial Cup in 2015 was of course a great accomplishment, the video replayed this for us.  ( see the video: https://youtu.be/4ICLYHqwZPE?si=MKgi-Tu_hlCTiHQm )

The Generals remain the only team to have won this Cup five times
