Bonnie Fraser

Her newly published book about her father “Fred Lodge’s Diaries- A Quiet Mans Journey Through Hell”.

Aug 06, 2019

A note from Bonnie Fraser

My presentation will be on my newly published book “Fred Lodge’s Diaries- A Quiet Mans Journey Through Hell”.  This book was created from the 7 Diaries my Father wrote from the day he enlisted in the military in 1939 when WW2 was declared to when he was repatriated in 1945. In this time period my Dad was captured on the beaches of Normandy during the Dieppe Raid and was incarcerated in a German Prisoner of War camp for 3 years.  My Dad was a committed diarist and kept very detailed daily journals of his every day activities and even when he was a POW.  I look forward to sharing some details of this very unique piece of Canadian history

2019 ROTARY CAKES & HAMS FOR THE HOLIDAYS - ORDER TODAY
Oct 12, 2019 11:00 AM – Nov 10, 2019 4:00 PM

2019 ORDER DEADLINE IS NOVEMBER 10, 2019 AT 4 PM

Once again this year, as has been the tradition for over 37 years, the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood is selling Heritage Holiday Cakes and Smoked Hams (again, this year from Brandt Meats) for Rotary projects, it was announced, today, by Ted Morrison, Past President of the Rotary Club and Chairman of the fundraising event.

The Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood supports many community services such as Lakeridge Health – Oshawa, the Colonel R. S McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre, Senior Citizens, Handicapped Adults, the Kids Safety Village of Durham Region, Participation House, Grandview Children’s Centre, YMCA, the Salvation Army, Simcoe Hall Settlement House, Mary Street School, UOIT and Durham College and many other services, here in the Durham Region and throughout the world, like the eradication of Polio, worldwide.

“The Heritage Holiday Cake is a 2 pound 8 ounce fruit cake, and is packaged in a gold and red box. Reasonably priced at $25.00 each, it makes for a very affordable Christmas gift. The all-butter fruit cakes with brandy extract make a perfect end to a traditional festive dinner or make an elegant gift idea for your family, friends and corporate clients. Many people tend to think of fruit cakes as a treat to be served at Christmas only but we are pleased to say that they make great gifts all year round ,” Mr. Morrison said.

“This year, we have available, 2 kg Smoked Black Forest Style Hams from Brandt Meats, delivered in a Brandt bag. They are lean hams, mildly cured, delicately smoked and cooked and can be enjoyed oven baked, sliced for sandwiches or cubed in a salad. The purchase price for 2 kg Brandt Black Forest Ham is a real bargain at $25.00”, he added.

“We have seen a significant increased demand from the business community in Oshawa, over the last few years. We thank them very much. Many corporations and companies are changing their gift giving to those that the whole family can appreciate. Businesses and organizations want to treat their employees and their customers in a manner which better reflects their company’s values. And that is why the Holiday Cakes and Hams have become very popular Holiday gifts for your family, friends, neighbours, employees, coworkers, or even your favourite customers,” Mr. Morrison remarked.

“In past years, we have seen businesses and companies in Oshawa and the surrounding area, switch their gift giving entirely to the Cakes and Hams for their employees and their valued customers. This year will be no exception,” he added.

Orders may be placed with any memebr of the Rotary club of Oshawa-Parkwood or with  Rotarian Ted Morrison by calling 905-623-3810 before November 10. You may also email your order to him at ted.sharron@rogers.com

OR

Orders may be placed with any memebr of the Rotary club of Oshawa-Parkwood or with Rotarian Devon Biddle by calling 905-576-2563 before November 10. You may also email your order to him at ljbiddle@sympatico.ca

The Cakes and Hams will be available sometime in the first week of December, just in time for the gift giving season.

During the World Polio Day event, we will be linking everyone to Rotary International's seventh annual World Polio Day event. We’ll be streaming it live. You will see it here live. Global health experts and Rotary’s celebrity polio ambassadors will discuss our remarkable progress toward a polio-free world.

And we’ll celebrate the 31st anniversary of the founding of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative”, Oshawa Past President Ron Dick added.

Oshawa-Parkwood Rotary Past President Dave Andrews noted, “In many cities all over the world, October 24, 2019 has been proclaimed World Polio Day in honour of Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio from the world. Rotarians will be gathering at city and town halls to acknowledge October 24 as World Polio Day, and to reconfirm our deep commitment to Eradicate Polio from the face of the earth.”

The world is on the verge of eliminating one of the most dreaded diseases of the 20th century -- poliomyelitis. During the first half of the 20th century, polio crippled over a half a million people every year. Even today, children in some developing countries continue to fall victim to the disease. But thanks in large part to Rotary International and to the 1.2 million Rotary members worldwide, including the 10 Durham Region Rotary Clubs , the disease will soon be all but a memory.

As World Polio Day draws closer, the world is 99.9% polio-free, the fight to end polio is not over and Rotary Clubs worldwide continue to raise funds to meet the challenge.

Since Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, 33 years ago, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.9 percent, from about 350,000 children paralyzed due to polio every year, and in all of 2019, only 37 have been confirmed - 10 in Afghanistan and 27 in Pakistan.

Oshawa Rotary Past President Ron Dick said, “Since 1985, Rotary members world-wide have contributed nearly US$1.8 billion to help immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio, and we have helped secure over US$ 7.2 billion from donor governments world-wide. Coinciding with World Polio Day, Rotary is ramping up its advocacy work in the 200 countries and regions where Rotary clubs exist to encourage every national government to commit to the funding levels needed to close the gap.”

“Events like this are happening all over the world on October 24 and throughout this week. Right here in our own Rotary District, in southern Ontario, Canada, flag raising ceremonies will be held in Markham, Richmond Hill, and other towns and cities in southern Ontario. There will be a flag raising ceremony at City Hall in Toronto right in the heart of the city, the home to the 2018 Rotary International Convention at 11 am on October 24. In the evening, we will also be lighting up the CN Tower, The Toronto sign in Nathan Phillips Square in downtown Toronto, and even Niagara Falls in red, white, and yellow , the colours of Rotary's End Polio Now campaign, to raise awareness to our cause and efforts in eradicating this disease,” he added.

“We encourage everyone to join us on October 24, 2019 starting at 5:15 pm to see what Rotary is doing to keep our promise to the children of the world – to eradicate polio” ,Oshawa Past President Ron Dick added.

Be sure to tune in on October 24 from 5:15 pm to 8:30 pm .Go to link which we will have soon. Here is last year's link for a sneak preview: https://durhamcollege.ca/globalclass/class/world-polio-day-rotary-international/ and look for the class name: World Polio Day - Rotary International. Rotarians and clubs have been involved with the eradication of Landmines since the passing of The Ottawa Treaty in 1997. The effort to establish an international treaty banning the use, sale and manufacture of landmines was led by then Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Lloyd Axworthy. He was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts and still serves as the Canadian Landmine Foundation’s Honourary Chair.

In 1999 the Canadian Landmine Foundation was formed with backing from the federal government’s $100 million Canadian Landmine Fund. Its task was to involve Canadians in mine action by raising awareness and funds for demining and victim assistance. Today the Foundation works to raise awareness at home and support mine action in Cambodia through partnerships with local organizations.

Our 2019 Distinguished Guest Speaker is John English, one of the creators of the Ottawa Treaty, signed by over 160 countries .

Perhaps a group of Rotarians from your Club may wish to take part . We hope to see you there.

Rotarians and Rotary Clubs have been two the largest financial contributors to the Canadian Landmine Foundation. 122 Clubs in 18 Districts coast to coast have contributed more than $260,000 to Canadian Landmine Foundation programs over the years. These funds went to projects that cleared mines and assisted survivors in places like Bosnia, Mozambique, Afghanistan and Cambodia. At the height of the Night of 1000 Dinners campaign, over 90% of all Rotary Districts in Canada were holding N1KD events!

If you are unable to attend but would like to donate, please make cheque payable to

The Canadian Landmine Foundation and mail to: Blake Grundy, 1281 Maddock Ct., Oshawa, ON L1K 0C7 .

Thank you for your continued support.
