AGAIN, THANK YOU TO: our very own Oshawa-Parkwood Rotarian Eric Guernsey for arranging the Zoom Meeting sharing with Heather McMillan, Executive Director of the Durham Workforce Authority, The Durham Workforce Authority is the acknowledged provider of local workforce information and champion of workforce development initiatives unique to Durham Region. Their Mission is to produce and offer comprehensive Labour Market Information to our stakeholders, to facilitate workforce solutions by engaging community partners and employers and to encourage development and maintenance of a sustainable and dynamic workforce. It was so nice to be able to have a whole hour for our Zoom meeting. We thank you both and hope we can continue in July.


President Sue MacKinnon started the meeting at 7:01 pm  and welcomed everyone !!!



Pres. Sue opened our meeting with 10 seconds of reflection and asked us to think about the great country we live in..



Treasurer Bill Creamer: DUES ARE DUE. Very soon, you will receive an invoice from our Treasurer for the 2020-21 Rotary Dues. The Annual Dues will be $230.00. At the same time, you will have the option to make a donation to The Rotary Foundation Annual Programs Fund of $100 and a donation to The Rotary Foundation PolioPlus Funds for $20 (or more if you wish). You will be credited towards your next Paul Harris Fellow Award. Please pay your dues promptly when you get your invoice, by mailing or dropping off your cheque (or cash), payable to the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood, to 96 King Street East, Oshawa L1H 1B6.  Thank you everyone. We have already received our invoice from Rotary International.

Meals On Wheels – 2 Volunteers Are Still Required - President is on vacation for a few weeks coming up . We need 2 volunteers. Please see President Sue so that our Rotary Club can fulfill our commitment to this very important community service. Jan has volunteered to help Bill Creamer for Monday August 31st 2020. The following Monday is a holiday so no meals on wheels will be done

Our Treasurer, Bill Creamer, is working with our bank for a way that we may be able to do e-transfers.

Which brings us to HAPPY TWOONIES: Since we have not met for many months, president Sue just knows that there is a great deal pf pent up demand to donate Happy Twoonies, when we return to the Oshawa Golf Club (or perhaps even earlier if Bill can get the e-transfer working. We could do that every week.) 

BULLETIN EDITORS REQUIRED: Past President Hilda Finnigan is asking everyone in the club to volunteer for a month and write the Club Bulletin. August is looked after. Thank you, Jan and Kris. We need editors for September 2020 through June 2021 . Please let Hilda know as soon as you can.

REMINDER: Kids Safety Village Committee and Board Meeting – Aug 24 at 3 PM at the Kids Safety Village

REMINDER: Aug 25 Zoom Meeting at 7 PM – Report by the Board of Directors on their plans and objectives for the 2020-21 Rotary Year – a good opportunity for members to ask questions and also volunteer to help.


OUR GLOBAL GRANT PROJECT IN INDIA - A TREMENDOUS SUCCESS: A very special thank you to Dr Kris Sachdeva and to Ganesh Kamath in India.

Look what happens when you put together 4 Rotary Clubs in 2 Rotary Districts, oceans apart and The Rotary Foundation: What a great success story for the children in Vandse, India.

When the Rotary Clubs of Oshawa-Parkwood and Whitby-Sunrise get together with the District 7070 Rotary Foundation Committee and 2 Rotary Clubs and a District 3182 in Vandse, India, and receive a Global Grant from the Rotary Foundation. what a difference it makes in so many lives.

Here is a note from our Rotarian friend in India, Ganesh Kamath,

"I thank all the Rotarians of the Rotary Club Oshawa-Parkwood, the Rotary Club Whitby Sunrise, and the Rotary District 7070 for their help and support. I am very much indebted to you , in particular, for your cooperation, help and attention in completing this project. This project has helped Government Higher primary school, Vandse in improving the caliber of the students and the managing committee, Mookambika Charitable Trust, Teachers, students and the parents are grateful to all the Rotarians. Rotary has earned immense goodwill in the village and the people from the vicinity have started approaching us for similar help to their school.

Weekly message to 2020-21 District 7070 AGs & Rotary and Rotaract Presidents from DG Mark Chipman, Aug. 10, 2020

Helping out Beirut - The explosion at the port of Beirut on August 4 impacted the entire city resulting in widespread destruction, loss of many lives, injuries in the thousands and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of citizens. The District is currently looking into possible opportunities for clubs to help including possible matching club donations by our Federal Government.

AIDs/HIV and Community Health Walk - congratulations to all who participated as the event raised approx $23K for AIDs/HIV programs and Feed Ontario!!  Here is the final version of the video with all the walks -  https://youtu.be/uMXwqSX59J0

Upcoming Membership related Zoom sessions - includes a New Members Gathering on August 20/20, and a Grow Rotary Workshop on October 3/20 for all Rotarians and Rotaractors (register for the following workshops online at rotary7070.org.

New Members Gathering – 1 hour on a weekday evening – currently all slated on Zoom – what an excellent opportunity for any member to learn more about Rotary

District 7070 Rotary Foundation Committee Members Wanted!!! - we are looking for new members for the District Foundation Committee to make a difference - have a look at the attachment for further details and pass on to your club members.  Deadline is August 15/20.

Interested in becoming an Assistant Governor? ...or know someone who may be interested in this role?  We are in the process of seeking several enthusiastic, qualified Rotarians to take on the important role of AG next year.   Check out the attached document outlining the AG mandate and qualifications required - application deadline is October 1/20 and can be emailed to me.  Rotary offers "endless opportunities" and this may be one of them for you!

Community Bottle and Food Drive,  September 26/20.  Are you ready for some fun and community engagement?  Join clubs across the District as we hold a Community Bottle and Food Drive on Saturday September 26.  This will be an opportunity to promote the great work and “endless opportunities” of Rotary from Etobicoke to Picton and Belleville and north to Alliston and Newmarket.  Each club will be responsible for the details and logistics of their event; the District will help promote on social media. Don’t forget to tag @rotary7070 and #rotary7070 on your own Club social media posts. Attached is a template to use to market the event – there are spaces on the template to add your club name, event date and location drop-offs.  Let’s make this happen!!!!



Some changes are coming due to COVID-19 restrictions

  • Members will need to inform David Andrews if they are not coming to a meeting just as before (by the Sunday evening prior to the Tuesday meeting). Note: We will need 100% of the members on board with this.

  • A combination of in person plus zoom does not look promising unless we can get a minimum of 20 members attending each meeting, in person at the Golf Club.



Our first day back is August 29 at 12:30 PM. Things are different under COVID-19. With only 2 bingo sessions a day, we may inly get one bingo per month. Stay tuned. Sandy is looking for volunteers. I believe that we have Lennis, Ted and Sharron, (and Dave A for one hour), We could use one more. Sandy will be the banker. Please let Sandy know as soon as you can.

Here is a note from the Red Barn:

As part of stage 3, upon opening, we will only be permitted 50 customers per session. This restriction, although keeps everyone safer, makes it very difficult to operate our regular bingo schedule.  Please be patient with us in this introductory phase as we anticipate opening with 2 events per day (12:30 pm and 6:45 pm) with new programs that must be geared towards smaller crowds due to the temporary capacity restrictions.  We have applied for a special request to increase the number of patrons permitted in the hall and we shall give you an update as soon as we have one.  Please know that we are working very hard towards opening and offering a product that is acceptable to you until things get back to normal.  

PLEASE NOTE: Doors will be opened at 11:30 am for our 12:30 pm session and 5:45 pm for the 6:45 pm session.

The Snack Bar will be closed unitl further notice but we have installed Vending Machines with Cold and Hot Beverages and Snacks for your convenience.

The health and wellness of our customers, charities, and staff are paramount.  Upon arrival, customers will be greeted by an attendant at the front entrance to ensure social distancing is adhered to.  Please note that if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms: fever, cough, shortness of breath; or if you have travelled outside of Canada in the last 14 days; or if someone you are in close contact with tested positive for Covid 19; or if you have been told to self-isolate by a medical professional or Public Health, we apologize but you will not be permitted to enter the premises.

Other Precautions in effect:

Promoting Social Distancing by managing traffic flow throughout our hall.
Customers, Staff and Charity Volunteers are asked to maintain a distance of at least 6 feet whenever possible.
Customers will be seated 6 feet from each other.
Sneeze Guards are placed at all selling stations.
Sanitizing Stations have been implemented throughout the hall.  Please use the provided hand sanitizer when entering the building and we encourage you to clean hands frequently with soap and warm water or hand sanitizer.
Regular cleaning/disinfecting of all surface areas.  Table tops and chair frames will be thoroughly cleaned/disinfected in between bingo sessions.
All staff and charity volunteers are required to wear masks or face coverings.
Customers are required wear masks or face coverings at all times while in the hall.  If you do not have your own mask one will be provided for you.
Restroom have enhanced automatic capabilities.
