We respectfully acknowledge that we are hosting this Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood meeting from land within the jurisdiction of Williams Treaties and on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nations, the Anishnaabe, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples. This acknowledgement reminds us of our responsibilities to our relationships and the ancestral lands on which we learn, share and live.

ROTARY MOMENT: The History of the Rotary Bell

In 1922 Rotary clubs in London and New York City had an attendance contest. The losers of the contest, London had to present a prize to the winner, the Rotary Club of New York City. The Prize was a bell from a popular patrol boat, which was placed on wood that came from HMS “Victory”. Admiral Nelsons Ship at the battle of Trafalgar. Since then the bell has been used in Rotary meetings to present as on a ship, order and discipline. The Bell informs us of the beginning and the closure of the regular club meeting. It is also rung to signify the change in leadership at the beginning of the Rotary Year, with the President ringing the bell one last time and then turning over the gavel.
2024 ROTARY REVERSE DRAW, DINNER & SILENT AUCTION: MAY 9, 2024
Dave A has tickets every week , for this year’s REVERSE DRAW on May 9. Tickets are $150. He asked everyone to think about possible sponsors too. Get your tickets from Dave. List of last year’s buyers and sellers distributed last week. Great reminder. Ted M encouraged everyone to be on the lookout for high quality silent auction items. The goal is 60 again this year. The average price of an item should be $100. Try and get experiences rather than things if possible.

FEB 2 - Cobourg Rotary Club is creating a “Speak Easy” Fundraiser event (6 to 11 pm )- where you’ll be transported back to the Roaring 1920s - an era known for its elegance, glamour, and prohibition. Once attendees receive the password and learn of the secret location in Cobourg, they will be invited to join us for an evening of signature cocktails, culinary delights, and live music! Rotary Club of Toronto East’s Silent Beauty Auction ends on February 4
HEART TO HEART GALA – FEBRUARY 24, 2024 – DEER CREEK:
Steve Burnett from the Rotary Club of Bowmanville invited us to join him at the heart to heart gala on Feb 24, 2024 at Deer Creek. Proceeds go to the Catholic Family Services of Durham. 3 course dinner with wine, silent & live auction, Dance and Raffles. Reception at 6 pm and Dinner at 7 pm. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. The Rotary Club of Bowmanville will be there with 2 tables. 2024 ROTARY GREAT LAKES WATARSHED CLEANUP: APRIL 27, 2024:
Great Lakes Water Cleanup – 9:30 am to 11:30 am at The Second Marsh with Oshawa and Courtice Rotary Clubs. Please let Dave know as soon as possible if you are attending. Bring your own water (in a reusable bottle) and a picker if you have one. Wear boots. It will be wet walking. 9 Civic Leaders so far will be attending. Park along Col Sam Drive near Second marsh sign (on south side of road).

MAR 2 – Rotary Club of Port Hope Gala – The Flavours of Port Hope: Bob Wallace has invited us to join him at the The Rotary Club of Port Hope’s fundraising gala called Enjoy the Flavours of Port Hope at Dalewood Golf Club on Saturday, March 2 starting at 6:00 p.m. The event will feature restaurants from Port Hope at food stations with small servings of their specialty foods. Guests will circulate to the food stations to pick up foods that they like. Guests will have seats at tables with their friends to enjoy the food before they go back up for more.
Participating Restaurants: Café Lviv, Cucina Urbana, Dalewood, Lisa’s catering, Nookies, Olympus Burger, Santorini Restaurant, Queenie’s Bakeshop, Beamish House, Schnitzel House and more.
There will also be live entertainment, a silent auction, raffles and prizes.

APRIL 18 to 21 – Rotary Youth Leadership Symposium - at Ganaraska Centre. Cost per young adult is $385. Clubs can sponsor. The 2024 Rotary Youth Leadership Symposium (RYLS) will be taking place, April 18-21, 2024 at the Ganaraska Forest Centre! The 3-night, 4-day experience is geared toward youth between the ages of 16-20 and will offer an inspiring program: Conflict Resolution, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Reconciliation and Land Based Education, Leadership, Hands-on Activities, Group Dynamics, Public Speaking, Outdoor Survival along with campfires, friendship and tons of fun and learning!!!
Rotary Clubs are encouraged to find and sponsor eligible participants within their community, as well as members of the Rotaract and Interact Clubs that they host. There are only 30 spots available - so act fast!
