You can order a box or more of these Canadian grown tulip bulbs and help Rotary End Polio Now. Rotarians have helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 122 countries. We are 99.9% polio free in the world, but we need your help to get to the finish line. The End Polio Now project, perhaps the largest of its kind ever undertaken by a service organization, has been hugely successful with only a few very small pockets of the disease remaining.
Call Rotarian Hilda Finnigan at 905-431-4258 or Ted Morrison at 905-623-3810 to place your order and make arrangements for pick up or delivery.
We are determined to complete this task and rid the earth of this devastating disease. Proceeds from this sale will go towards Rotary’s End Polio Now Campaign.
Cash or cheque made out to the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood OR order online on our fundraising page funditrotaryoshawaparkwood.ca and pay by credit card.

Jelly Jar Guessing Game
So many off the wall guesses. From 33-300! There were 184 jelly hearts. Two folks tied for closest – Leon Efraim and Marie Igbokwe. Marie won the coin toss and took home the jelly hearts. We raised $91.00 for End Polio tonight!
Trivia Fun
A large and animated group attended tonight’s meeting (26 in total!). In addition to our spouses, we enjoyed the company of long-time Rotarian Reg Malachowski and his wife, Sandy. Also joining us was our newest member, Sudeep Ooomen and his wife, Sarah.
Instead of a traditional meeting format, Tess put together 20 (of what she thought to be ‘easy’) trivia questions. Five teams competed for a win. The questions were about both Valentine’s Day and Rotary. The best score from Team David M, Craig P, John D, Camille M, & Linda P. was 14/20. The ‘booby prize’ for lowest score went to Donald’s team with a whopping 6/20. This was a surprise because Donald often blurted out the correct answer instead of writing it down.
The questions that everyone got were:
What do XXOO symbolize? (kisses & hugs)
Where was the very first Rotary club in Canada? (Winnipeg)

Special Rotary Meeting.
Thanks to Dave Andrews we were ZOOMED into this Zone training on Storytelling and using the Rotary Brand. Amy Sheller, the Public Image Coordinator for Zone 32, is a video storyteller, film maker and President of the Rotary Club of Kutztown. She provided us with important “How tos” on using the Rotary Brand when telling our Rotary stories. Some highlights included 1) examples of incorrect branding, 2) how to log into Brand Central and download images and documents, and 3) using a story-telling template to help us design and share our stories. To enhance our stories, she suggested using action photos to support each story. We are People of Action, and another good idea is to spotlight members and their Rotary work on social media channels. These ideas energize our clubs and promote membership initiatives. Joe Solway, from Bowmanville Rotary, provided additional suggestions and reminded us that each month the District newsletter (edited by our own Dave Andrews) provides new ideas. Check out this link. Finally Joe and Amy encouraged each of us to visit the Learning Centre in My Rotary and take the three courses on using the Rotary Brand.
President David Mankiewicz closed the meeting at 8:02 PM.

Ted Morrison: “Rotary’s Relationship With The UN”
The partnership between Rotary and the United Nations is a testament to what can happen when vision meets courage, and when service meets global responsibility. Ted provided a historical overview of the reasons why Rotary was invited to shape the vision that is now the UN. When the UN was being created the delegates turned to Rotary as a peace-building model. Rotary already had 40 years’ experience building peace though ground-breaking global projects. (No weapons needed!) Rotary’s influence helped weave our values into the fabric of the UN Charter. Nowhere is this more powerfully evident than our shared fight to END POLIO NOW. Today Rotary holds the highest consultative status seat of any NGO at the UN. As we look to the future our shared legacy proves that together we have changed the world and together we will do it again. Another beautiful Rotary moment.
Maple syrup is ready to be distributed. Contact Ted Morrison to arrange to get yours.
It seems that this editor forgot to include a picture of Mr. Robbie (I love St Pat’s Day) in the March 18th Bulletin. Here is his smiling face. Sorry Robbie.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests:
We welcomed our guests from Whitby Sunrise Rotary Club Janet Thorsteinson, Debbie Morgan and Joyce Marshall.
Janet is the founder and Chair of Sew Girls Can Go To School. Debbie and Joyce help with the hands-on project.
We also welcomed Kay Hurren, Sarah Oommen, and all the way from Vancouver our Past President Sue MacKinnon.
Always a warm welcome to our Honourary member Linda Biddle (a great seamstress). Kay Hurren and Esther Trotter also pitched in.
At 6 pm, Robbie Larocque with Terri Lynn and Veronica welcomed us for the hands-on cutting and sewing.
Amandeep Singh joined us and brought his wife and son to help us too. Rotarian Camille Miquel Farfan, also
joined us directly from classes at Durham College.
This was a special event (a hands-on community service project meeting of the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood) for sewing re-usable menstrual pads for the teenage girls in the Dominican Republic. Without the ability to care for themselves during their periods, they miss 4 to 6 days of school a month, every month. Sewing these reusable pads will allow them to attend, thereby allowing better grades, and a better future. We had over 20 Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood members, spouses and their friends cut the material into circles and strips, to sew the pads, and to help with other tasks between those steps. Our efforts tonight will allow 200 girls in the Dominican Republic to go to school full time and receive an education.
After dinner we gathered in the Mclaughlin Room at the Oshawa Golf Club. The room was set up and ready to go. Janet divided us up into different workstations where we created and cut patterns of cloth and sewed the pieces together to make reusable sanitary napkins. The menstrual pads need to be assembled and once assembled, we turned them inside out, ready to be sewn again.
Thank you, Janet, Debbie and Joyce, for letting us help you make pads for 200 girls in the Dominica Republic who will be able to go to school and stay in school.

Ted Morrison “The Power of Giving?”
In previous Moments Ted asked, “What is Rotary?” and “Who is a Rotarian?” This week he asked us to explore the power of giving. When we are asked why we joined Rotary, our most common response is “to give back to the community.” When talking about giving we often focus on the impact of providing meals or giving vaccinations. These are important and are the visible impacts. But tonight, Ted focused on how giving transforms us. We are reminded that we are part of something larger than ourselves and our actions produce a ripple effect in ways we may not fully see.
We are transformed. Giving lifts our spirits, sharpens our sense of purpose, and fills us with a quiet kind of joy. This doesn’t need a press release or a lapel pin to be real. It’s that feeling we get when we know we’ve made someone’s day a little easier. It’s knowing we are living our values. Values + action -- that’s where the real magic of Rotary happens.
Every act of giving, no matter how small, strengthens our community and us. It connects, humbles, and reminds us that the best part of life are the parts we share. By giving to the Rotary Foundation, we share resources with the rest of the world through Global Grants that connects a club in Oshawa to a life-saving water project in a remote village far away from us.Giving to the Rotary Foundation fuels hope, strengthens communities, educates children, and reduces the threat of disease. More importantly these connections promote peace far beyond the reach of one club. Our donations turn compassion into change creating a lasting impact around the world.

Ted Morrison “Who Is A Rotarian?”
A few weeks ago, Ted challenged us to think about “What is Rotary?”. Tonight, he asked us “What is a Rotarian?”
Being a Rotarian, for Ted, means more than attending meetings or wearing a pin. It means choosing service over self and action over indifference. It means believing that small acts, when done together, can create lasting change. He reminded us that through Rotary we turn compassion into impact by supporting our communities, reaching across borders, and building friendships. Rotarians don’t ask who deserves help. We ask, “How can we help.” He gave each of us the following handout. Mine is hanging just about my computer at my desk in my office. Thank you, Ted, for another great Rotary moment.

Esther T: Happy to be here and Happy New Year! Their granddaughter is playing in an international hockey tournament with120 teams from 21 countries. So far granddaughter’s team is undefeated.
Larry H: Looking for something red to wear for Valentine’s Day, Larry found his old Olympic 2010 Vancouver hockey jersey. Since he’s been wearing it, Canada has started to win more medals (GOLD!). He even wore it to a Generals game, and they won. Guess he better leave it on.
Shashi: Always happy to be with her Rotary family and especially to learn about Chinese New Year. She will be missing a few meetings because of her trip to India. She also was happy to see Peter H back at a meeting. His speaker Thank You is legendary.
Robbie: described his snow-shoeing experience at the cottage. The snowshoes worked well. His poles not so well. They sunk down to over his hips. The two trips he made exhausted him.
Peter H: Happy to return. His business has made a huge pivot, and he is now working with the big food brokers. He even went to the Food Broker of North America meeting. His heart is always with Rotary. He also thanked us for the hospitality his girls received at the Christmas party.
Kim: shared some tidbits on how to make the new year better. One tip was to avoid washing your hair for the first 3 days. You do not want to wash away your prosperity. She will leave soon for her big trip to Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Singapore. The Visa registrations were a pain, but she is now all set.
Happy New Year! The Year of the Horse

The ACE Climatic Aerodynamic Wind Tunnel (CAWT) is one of the most sophisticated of its kind in the world. It is designed to provide a multitude of industries with world-class and independent testing capabilities to validate prototype products under a wide range of climatic conditions. Climatic simulation systems include solar capabilities, rain, freezing rain, light snow and blizzards - all with wind speeds capable of 300 km/h at temperatures ranging from -40˚C to +60˚C. The ACE CAWT is unique due to its seven to 14.5 m² variable nozzle, which enables testing of subjects ranging from very small to extremely large, in a wide variety of wind and climatic combinations.
Examples of tests conducted in the Climatic Aerodynamic Wind Tunnel include:
aerodynamic testing
heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) testing in vehicles
physiological/cognitive tests (human trials)
product quality control
snow mitigation (architectural)
thermodynamic testing
wind turbines
Thank you very much from our 2 Rotary Clubs.

Our club, The Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood located in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada, in Rotary International District 7070 (in an area of Southern Ontario including Toronto, and stretching north to Alliston and east to Belleville), is part of one of the greatest service organizations in the world.
Members attend Dinner Meetings held each Tuesday at 6:30 pm at the Oshawa Golf Club, 160 Alexandra St, Oshawa , where we gather in friendship, talk about upcoming events and service projects, and listen to guest speakers (usually local and sometimes international leaders of our community).
Comprised of both young, dynamic, and dedicated newer members as well as devoted energetic and well respected long standing members of the community, the men and women of the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood aim to “make a difference” at home in Oshawa, in Ontario, throughout Canada and around the world, by devotedly living the Rotary motto "Service Above Self".
Oshawa-Parkwood Rotarians believe also in the importance of being active in all seven Areas Of Focus and the five Rotary Avenues of Service – Club Administration, Community Service, International Service, Vocational Service, and Youth Service (formerly called New Generations). The Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood members not only vocalize their concern for the local community and abroad, they actively participate in finding unique ways to meet the needs of the many organizations and causes.
The Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood, which consists of about 42 members (professional Oshawa businessmen and women, from a wide variety of the community professions in Oshawa), and now in its 49th year in Oshawa, meets every Tuesday evening at The Oshawa Golf Club (160 Alexandra Street in Oshawa).
To assist you in getting to know us better, The Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood is the second Rotary Club in Oshawa which was chartered in October 1976, having been sponsored by The Rotary Club of Oshawa. We support many local and International service projects in Oshawa, in Ontario, throughout Canada and the entire world. Here in the local area are just some of our many ventures. We work with the Ajax Optimists and the Durham Regional Police and created The Kids Safety Village. We are very proud to be associated with the Village. Some of our Club members are on The Board of Directors of The Kids Safety Village and have been since Day One. We are also great supporters of Lakeridge Health Oshawa, The R. S. McLaughlin Regional Cancer Centre, Handicapped Adults and the Participation House Projects, Parkwood Estate, Durham College , Sharon's Kids, Waverly Public School (playground), Friends of The Second Marsh, bursaries for grads of MCVI , Grandview Kids Centre, and Feed The Need in Durham, just to name a few.

And through the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, we join with thousands of Rotary Clubs worldwide to perform many world community service projects, including Operation Eyesight (Cataract operations in third world countries), Canadian Land Mine Foundation for the eradication of landmines, a Literacy program in Guatemala, Shelter Box Canada, a school and school bus in rural India, water projects in Laos and Uganda, and many more. The most important Rotary Foundation project and most successful of which is The Polio Plus Campaign which started in the late 1980's to rid polio from the world. The Rotary Club is actively working with 1.2 million Rotarians world-wide to eradicate Polio from the face of the earth.
The program, started in 1985, called PolioPlus is Rotary’s flagship program. By the time polio is eradicated, Rotary club members world-wide will have contributed US $ 1.7 billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than two billion children in 122 countries.
Rotary is a spearheading partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, along with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Polio is active in only 2 countries and Rotary is calling on everyone to help them end Poilo forever. Since 1985, Rotary and its partners are on the brink of eradicating this tenacious disease, but a strong push is needed now to root it out once and for all. It is a window of opportunity of historic proportions.
The world is on the verge of eliminating one of the most dreaded diseases of the 20th century -- poliomyelitis. During the first half of the 20th century, polio crippled over a half a million people every year. Even today, children in some developing countries continue to fall victim to the disease. But thanks in large part to Rotary International and to the 1.2 million Rotary members worldwide, including the 10 Durham Region Rotary Clubs , the disease will soon be all but a memory.
The world is 99.9% polio-free, the fight to end polio is not over and Rotary Clubs world-wide continue to raise funds to meet the challenge.
Since Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1985, the incidence of polio has plummeted by more than 99.9 percent, from about 350,000 children paralyzed due to polio every year, and in all of 2017, only 12 have been confirmed as of October 18, 2017 : 7 in Afghanistan and 5 in Pakistan.
Since 1985, Rotary members world-wide have contributed nearly US$1.7 billion to help immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio, and we have helped secure over US$ 7.2 billion from donor governments. Coinciding with World Polio Day, Rotary is ramping up its advocacy work in the 200 countries and regions where Rotary clubs exist to encourage every national government to commit to the funding levels needed to close the gap.
In many cities all over the world, October 24 has been proclaimed World Polio Day in honour of Rotary’s efforts to eradicate polio from the world. Rotarians will be gathering at city and town halls to acknowledge October 24 as World Polio Day, and to reconfirm our deep commitment to Eradicate Polio from the face of the earth. Every year fellow Rotarian and Chair of Durham Region, John Henry proclaims October 24 as World Polio Day in all of the communities in the Region. Right here in our own Rotary District, in southern Ontario, Canada, flag raising ceremonies are held in Markham, Richmond Hill, and other towns and cities in southern Ontario. And there is always a flag raising ceremony at City Hall in Toronto right in the heart of the city, the home to the 2018 Rotary International Convention on October 24. We have also been able to light up the CN Tower, The Toronto sign in Nathan Phillips Square in downtown Toronto, and at the University of Toronto – Scarborough campus, on October 24, in red, white, and yellow ,the colours of the End Polio Now campaign, to raise awareness to our cause and efforts in eradicating this disease. ”
We thank everyone who join us every year , on October 24, for our annual World Polio Day events for the last three years from The Rotary Global Classroom at Durham College as we livestream our event to thousands worldwide as we hear and see Rotary leaders, Global Polio Eradication Initiative partners, celebrity ambassadors, polio survivors, and others here in southern Ontario and from all parts of the world update us on our efforts worldwide to End Polio Now. Watch previous World Polio Day livestreams from Durham College, Oshawa at https://durhamcollege.ca/globalclass/class/rotary-international-world-polio-day-2/ and at www.endpolio.org
Background
A highly infectious disease, polio causes paralysis and is sometimes fatal. As there is no cure, the best protection is prevention. For as little as US 60 cents worth of vaccine, a child can be protected against this crippling disease for life. After the successful engagement of over 200 countries and 20 million volunteers, polio could be the first human disease of the 21st century to be eradicated.
The Global Polio Eradication Initiative is spearheaded by the World Health Organization, Rotary International, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). It includes the support of governments and other private sector donors.
Rotary’s main responsibilities are fundraising, advocacy, and volunteer recruitment. Since 1995, the advocacy efforts of Rotary and its partners have helped raise more than $8 billion from donor governments. And Rotary clubs also provide on the ground help in polio-affected communities.
Early in 2016, two members of the Rotary Club of Oshawa-Parkwood and a spouse traveled to India, with their own money, and participated in a 4-day National Immunization Day (NID) program. They were three of the 2.3 million vaccinators that went to 190 million homes and 170 million children were immunized in one day. That is Rotarians Making a Difference at its finest moment.
It is so important to generate the funds needed to End Polio Now. To fail is to invite a polio resurgence that would condemn millions of children to lifelong paralysis in the years ahead. The bottom line is this: As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, all children – wherever they live – remain at risk.
As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere remain at risk. The stakes are that high
